The Unified Commonwealth (UC) is a supranational political and economic union of all regions and settlements on the Thorildsby Project. Its goals are to ensure a cooperative athmosphere where a war would be impossible. This is realized through countless projects, for example free travel by rail and the expansion of it, culture exchange projects and no realistic borders.
The creation of the UC was proposed by Årania and Thorildhøj (see Allan Egeval), and was supported by Kalkdui and Pantokyst in -9Ð after the War of Dignity and was established after the liberation of Lanborg at exactly 0Ð.
Establishment
After the Åranians, together with the help of Thorildhøj and Kalkdui defeated Høvemark the War of Dignity, the Commonwealth was established with goals in mind to prevent another war and ensure equal cooperation everywhere. Therefore a formal constitution was written:
- All regions have the same level of independence
- All regions have to make cooperative projects
- Healthcare, education and transport have to be free of charge for the citizens
- All regions have to use the same units of measurement
- Anglish or English have to be taught at every school
- 0Ð begins on the Commonwealth day
- At least every 3Ð, citizens should have the ability to vote to influence their politics
- The establishment of military is illegal, unless it is used for traditions
- No region can leave the Commonwealth
- Høvemark should pay reparations to Årania and accepts its responsibility for causing the Åranian genocide
- If Fyn feels an incompetent government of a region, a constitutional coup will be used without hesitation
- All settlements should be treated with care and should not get destroyed without a reason
- Railways should benefit as many as possible
Funding
As the Unified Commonwealth is a monarchic democracy, Fyndrix invests a lot into protecting old traditions and buildings and expanding the connectivity between all settlements, for example by rail or boat.
Name
The name Unified Commonwealth was one of the multiple propsed, such as just Commonwealth, United Commonwealth or Monarchy. It was picked because it reflects the most on the traditions of the many regions, as the word "Unified" comes from Anglish whereas United has its roots from old, tribal languages.
Flag
This flag was picked because the dark blue represented the unity and uniformity of all nations and the gold represented the richness and intelligence of all nations. The dragon head shield is seen as the overmighty protector of all rights, being the star.
Government
The Commonwealth's government is divided into high-, mid- and low-level parliaments. The high-level parliament is the Commonwealth Assembly, which has power over the entire Commonwealth. The mid- and low-level parliaments are regional parliaments and town/city halls or settlement councils respectively. The laws and governing of a certain place are determined by all three acting levels of parliament in that place. An exception to this rule are the Unincorporated Territories, which are not part of any region and are thus missing the mid-level of government entirely. Generally, there also exists an overseer for the Commonwealth Assembly and some of the regional parliaments, whose job it is to rule out any governmental incompetence or unconstitutional action. These overseers are traditionally chosen dynastically.
Commonwealth Assembly, high-level
The Commonwealth Assembly is the highest level of government within the Commonwealth. It consists of 600 seats which can be voted by all people who live in the Commonwealth every Ð. As most voters are inclined towards their own local parties, the Commonwealth Assembly usually features dozens of parties with each only having a very small number of seats; to counteract the difficulty of coordination, caused by having this large amount of parties, global groups were established to bundle parties with the same or similar interests from different areas. These groups are however neither fully rigid, with parties frequently changing between them or leaving entirely, nor entirely official. Going from left-seated to right-seated, these groups are: Socialists, Social-Democrats, Minority Alliance, Liberals, Backyard, NPR and National Pride.
In the Commonwealth Assembly there exists no differentiation between government and opposition, all parties are equally eligible to propose and vote on laws, make requests to other parts of government, hold speeches and appoint party members to become ministers of certain authorities. This governmentless system is highly controversial, but many experts believe it is important for handling highly delicate decisions and greatly reduces corruption at such a large scale.
The Commonwealth Assembly is overseen by Fyndrix, who has been appointed to this office shortly after the creation of the Commonwealth, being the assassin of Einar II he is also seen as one of the founders of the Commonwealth. By technicality, he has the full power to veto any law and dismiss any party from the Commonwealth Assembly and also take over all parts of government entirely, but has never made use of such.
