The Årania-Lanborg war, also called War against Årania and War of Dignity was a war between Årania and its southern neighbour Hófasviði. The war was started by Einar after he thought Åranians have had caused the Fire of Lanborg, which destroyed multiple archives and districts of the city. Researchers later found out that that was Åranians did not cause the fire.

Causes

In -98Ð, a big part of the city of Lanborg burnt to ashes in the Fire of Lanborg. Inside of the massive destroyed part of the city was the city archive, also erasing about 300Ð of Lanborgian history and culture. This made the in -96Ð-coronated Ari II furious, as he remembered his childhood in the destroyed areas. The father Ari II forced to rebuild the entire district (Litasveit and others), yet Ari II wasn't happy with this action and wanted to punish for the grief. With his irresponsible behaviour during his chancellorship, he caused two megainflations, banned the usage of Tungmal and Åranian on public signs and stopped teaching them in schools, threatened to raise taxes if he was criticized and secretly grew an army.
Ari II always believed Åranians caused the Fire of Lanborg, so when he fell fatally ill in -81Ð, his last decree was for his son Einar to start a war against Årania. The young and impressionate Einar didn't want to embarass his father, so he followed the advice and started the war in -67Ð.

Course of the war

First invasion

The war began from the recently built Ari Military Base in -67Ð, which today lies in ruins in southern Årania. Einar commanded his "Longrifle Wave" towards the south of Årania, where they deported the local population from and held them captive as slaves. Einar's strategy was to arm the first wave of troops as much as possible for intimidation, because arming an entire nation's army was impossible monetarywise. The Åranian army that tried to resist was brutally murdered (~50), as they had no gunpowder-based firearms, unlike the richer Lanborgians. From that point, Årania was in a state of emergency and as the Longrifle Wave advanced, more and more innocent farmers were held captive or killed and seized of their property and belongings.

First year of war

In the first Ð of war, the Lanborg Empire was able to advance and occupy the religious site of the Hæjvé Temple and the Midlangrot. A part of the temple was left in ruins, as the Åranian army defended the site with an army of 150 persons, meanwhile the a third of the rifle wave tried to attack the site with only 70 people. The Lanborgian army won the fight over Hæjvé, having gunpowder-based firearms.

Aftermath

Treaty of Vesgrot

After the end of the war, at -48Ð, Einar II did not want to resign from his throne, and threatened to detonate a big part of Lanborg and its innocent residents, in case of a full-scale invasion of his Empire. However, the Northern Coalition wanted to liberate the Lanborg Empire from their dictator and allow basic human rights. As a compromise, the Treaty of Vesgrot was set in place, where Einar II was allowed to stay emperor of the Lanborg Empire under the following criteria:

  • The Lanborg Empire takes responsibility for causing the War of Dignity and has to pay reparations
  • The Lanborg Empire has to be transparent in all criterias of its future development
  • All citizens have to have right of movement with open borders
  • All military has to be supervised by the Northern Coalition
  • The Høvemark side of the Høvemark-Årania border has to be demilitarized
  • Killing citizens in the Lanborg Empire has to be punished by death

Additionally, allthough not part of the Treaty of Vesgrot, Einar II together with the Åranian monarch Gunnar af Hoogbjerg negotiated the border between Høvemark and Årania to be at <put coords here Fyn>. Einar II did not want to give Årania more land further south, so Årania recieved an a building block as an exclave in Lanborg.

Einar II only agreed to the Treaty of Vesgrot for a limited time, which was negotiated to be 40Ð long, ending at 8.4Ð.
