Reimer in his apartment in Lanborg, -54Ð.

Erich Reimer (born Aksel Erik Reimar) (-82Ð to -50Ð) was an inventor from Lanborg famous for his discovery of thermal generators and air conditioners. He is also famous for being a rebel against Einar's totalitarian regime.

Early life

Born in the south district of Lanborg, Reimer was interested in physics from a young age. According to his teachers, he excelled in subjects like math, chemistry and physics which gave him the oppurtunity to attend the Lanborg University in the physics department, which was then considered the most prestigeous university of the world. This happened at -64Ð, 3Ð after the beginning of the War of Dignity which was kept a secret. Over the next Ð, investment into the Lanborg University decreased dramatically, due to the war, which was oblivious to the population. This meant that the students had to work with very limited ressources to study.

Early Work life

After graduating the Lanborg University in -52Ð, Reimer worked as the head of a steam factory north of Lanborg, accumulating to half of the city's energy supply. As he came in contact with slaves from mostly Åranian and Kalkdui regions, they told everyone in the factories about the horrors and the conspiracies of a "war" (referencing the War of Dignity which was oblivious to most people in Lanborg). The people that told about the conspiracies were quickly taken care of by the factory guards, under Einar's request.

Invention of air conditioning

Following Reimer's excellent job as the head of a steam factory, Einar raised his position to the head of the Lanborgian energy network, now managing the entire system. After some Ð at that position, Reimer explained he would rather work as an inventor and that he had some ideas for improving the energy network, but needed free time and financial ressources. Einar agreed to his statement and financed Reimer with all needed supplies for his "invention". This turned out to be a prototype of the air conditioner and fridge we know today, using brine funneled from a mountain to cool the steam engines, which heated up the brine, and transporting it with the help of pumps to mountains.

This new method of cooling the steam engines in the factories made them able to overclock and produce up to three times their initial output, making Reimer recieve a medal and being called out by Einar as this generation's best inventor. From there, the chatty Reimer grew a friendship with Einar not for social reasons, but because he wanted to find out whether the conspiracy theories are true or not. This way, he got access to classified military documents proving the War of Dignity to be true, with records of every single person assasinated for leaking the information.

Reimer's prototype for a thermal generator, -51Ð.

Invention of thermal generators

After -52Ð, the now truth-knowing Reimer set out to invent a new solution for the rising energy problems, as Lanborg modernised a lot towards more energy comsumption over the past Ð. Using his knowledge of temperature flow, he used the financial aid from Einar to dig a small 10x10cm hole in the west of the Lanborg Empire's territory. When water was placed over the hot hole, it immediately boiled and was used to power a turbine - Reimer just invented a renewable source of energy.

After the test was deemed successful, Reimer returned to Lanborg to share his results. However, Einar wanted clear energy output, so a new, bigger hole was dug, about 500m north of the previous one. As this was a big project, construction moved slowly on the second, bigger hole. After reaching deep enough and most workers being in Lanborg for a break, an earthquake of massive magnitude broke out, killing thousands of fish and other animals.

As the earthquake was mostly on Kalkdui territory and no Lanborgian settlements were affected, no reports were made on the earthquake and Einar cancelled the project, so noone would figure out about the earthquake. Despite this, Reimer analysed the hole dug by the workers and compared it to traditional earthquakes. He quickly found out that this was an artificial earthquake, running directly between the holes dug. According to his diaries, he said that the earthquake was recreatable if a hole is dug slowly next a finished one, causing a break between them and spouting lava, which causes the ground to move and create a ravine, which then releases lava and causes a new ravine.

He kept his results a secret, because he knew Einar would use them for killing Åranians. In his diaries, he wrote he felt like a mass murderer, having killed unimaginable amounts of wildlife and probably Kalkduians. This made him want to revolt, as he was already active in planning a revolution illegaly in a group.

Protest on the day after Reimer's death, -50Ð.

Death

In -50Ð, Reimer commited suicide, on the same day he leaked classified, top secret military documents. Soon after, major protests followed, which were resolved with violence. This made Lanborgians question their king and morals, despite the documents proving the War of Dignity. For many new soldiers replacing dead ones (being called out for special training) this was a reason to boycott fighting and causing damage to the Lanborgian army. This includes leaking important information to the Allies, bombing military bases and switching sides alltogether.

After 0Ð, Reimer's brother published his diary, as Lanborg was freed of the dictatorship and censorship. Reimer hid his diary near Straskur, which his brother dug up almost 50Ð ago. Today, the diary was copied and is located in the Lanborg New Archive.

Today's perspective

With the freedom came the new inventors and engineers from around the new Commonwealth, which improved Reimer's designs of cooling and the thermal generator. Thermal generation, which was made safe, is the main source of energy insinde of the Commonwealth. Reimer's inventions are considered vital to the normal life today, as no Conditioning or cheap energy generation would be availible today.
