Homemade Åraniaian cinnamon Sødsnegl with a traditional fruit bowl

Sødsnegl (English: Sweet Snail) is a traditional Åranian pastry with many variations, most notably with vanilla cream or with cinnamon. It's sometimes reffered to as Sweet Roll in the international world. It can be enjoyed in Åranian cafés across the world, and in almost every café or bakery inside Årania.

Lore

The Sødsnegl originated from Åranian settlers trying to recreate the famous Thorildsbyan (then only Mørkby existed) Spandauer. However, they folded the dough incorrectly and over time the dough was formed like a snail. The jelly filling was replaced with the popular vanilla cream.

During the War of Dignity, when Kalkdui helped out Åranians to fight against Lanborgians, spices like cinnamon were exchanged. With the local population of Årania mixing with Kalkdui army members, Kalkduians began mixing cinnamon into the Sødsnegl, which later became known as the Cinnamon Sødsnegl.

Variations

  • Classic Vanilla Sødsnegl (Vanillesødsnegl) is the most widespread variety of Sødsnegl, and the most widely spread. The Vanilla Sødsnegl is one of the most famous Åranian pastries and is an important piece of the country's culture.

  • Cinnamon Sødsnegl (Kanelsødsnegl) is the second most popular variety of Sødsnegl, dating back to the War of Dignity and Kalkduian friendship. The Cinnamon Sødsnegl is an important part of the friendship between Årania and Kalkdui, many families of Åranian-Kalkduian ethnicity still bake them as a tradition and see them an important piece of their cultural identity.

  • Experimental Sødsnegl is a category of multiple types of Sødsnegl, made in hipster-influenced bakeries, mostly in Åranvik and Lyvan. They serve no cultural purpose, yet for many middle to high-class citizens working in the city centres of both cities they have become a routine and a sign of "civilised, office life". Notable examples include Lime Sødsnegl, Chocolate Sødsnegl, (Honey-) Glazed Sødsnegl and Cookie Sødsnegl.
